Portugal, an underrated and captivating country in Europe, is a must-visit destination that deserves more recognition. With just a six-hour flight from New York, Portugal should definitely be on your travel radar. Our journey began in Lisbon, or as it's locally pronounced, Lisboa, where we were enchanted by the city's charm. We had the pleasure of staying at The Lumiares, a remarkable five-star hotel located in Bairro Alto. This boutique luxury hotel exceeded our expectations, providing apartment-style rooms with a bedroom, living room, and kitchenette. From the moment we stepped foot inside, it felt like a true home away from home. The staff were incredibly kind, attentive, and always ready to assist. Choosing the right hotel in a convenient location is crucial, especially when traveling with children, and we were able to rest well each night. One of the highlights was starting our mornings with breakfast on the rooftop terrace, offering breathtaking views of the city. And, of course, the pancakes were absolutely delightful!

Lisbon boasts a remarkable tramway network that spans across the city, providing an enjoyable mode of transportation for locals and tourists alike.

For picturesque views of houses, churches, and the Tagus River, make sure to visit the stunning Miradouro Sao Pedro de Alcantara, a terrace adjacent to the Santa Luzia church.

If you're in Lisbon, don't miss out on the vibrant and lively Rue Nova do Carvalho, popularly known as the Pink Street. This unique street, adorned with hanging umbrellas, is perfect for capturing memorable photos or Instagram moments. While it's a bustling party spot, we found it enjoyable to visit during the day with our young children.

A visit to Lisbon is incomplete without experiencing the Time Out Market. Situated within the historic Mercado da Ribeira, a traditional market hall built in the 19th century, this food market is a haven for food enthusiasts. Offering a variety of the city's best culinary delights under one roof, the market allows you to explore different stalls and try something delicious from each one. It's like dining in a bustling cafeteria, and the quality of the food is truly outstanding.

To explore the city while learning about its history, consider taking a Tuk Tuk tour. These small motorized vehicles provide an excellent way to navigate Lisbon's streets and discover its hidden gems. You can easily find tour guides throughout the city and customize the tour according to your preferences. It's a fantastic activity for families, too!

One of the things I adore about Portugal is its abundant use of tile mosaic in the streets and buildings. Whether you're looking down at your feet or gazing up at the architecture, you'll be greeted by beautiful tile designs. It's important to wear appropriate footwear as the mosaic tiles can be slippery when walking. When traveling with young children, I recommend opting for a sturdy stroller instead of an umbrella stroller. We found the Chico Corso LE to be extremely helpful in maneuvering our daughter through the city. Lisbon's hilly and uneven terrain requires a reliable stroller, although there were a few narrow roads where we had to be cautious.

The Belém Tower, also referred to as the Tower of St. Vincent, is an ancient fortress situated in Lisbon's Belém district. Built in the early 16th century, this UNESCO World Heritage Site served as both a defensive structure for the city and a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon. Strategically positioned by the Tagus River, the tower safeguarded the harbor entrance while fulfilling roles as a fortress, customs checkpoint, and lighthouse. Its four stories are connected by a spiral staircase, each serving a different purpose, such as a chapel, living quarters, and a watchtower. The Belém Tower stands as an iconic symbol of Portugal and is a must-see landmark.

While exploring the Belém Tower, be sure to visit the nearby Monument of the Discoveries—an awe-inspiring monument that pays tribute to Portugal's Age of Exploration. After your visit to the Belém Tower and the Monument of the Discoveries, make sure to indulge in the delectable pastries at Pasteis de Belém. Established in 1837, this renowned bakery serves the best pastéis (custard tarts) in all of Lisbon.

When in Lisbon, there's one historic treasure that should be on every traveler's list: the Castle of São Jorge. This imposing fortress, known as Castelo de São Jorge, graces the skyline of Portugal's capital city. Perched majestically atop one of Lisbon's seven hills, this iconic castle not only offers breathtaking views but also a captivating journey through Portugal's rich history.

In my family, we cherish the opportunity to explore vibrant cities while also indulging in some much-needed relaxation by the beach. That's precisely why we set our sights on the Algarve region, particularly Lagos. Nestled in the Algarve, Lagos beckons with its stunning beaches, hiking trails, and a wealth of activities for families and adventure seekers alike.

Lagos is renowned for its diverse offerings, catering to a wide range of interests. During our stay in Lagos, we had the pleasure of residing at the Iberostar, a luxurious 5-star hotel that epitomizes elegance. The hotel offers the choice of all-inclusive packages or à la carte dining, making it suitable for all types of travelers. With three inviting pools and family-friendly amenities, the Iberostar ensures a comfortable and enjoyable stay. For couples seeking a touch of romance, the hotel also features suites with private pools.

The location couldn't have been better. A mere 5-10 minute stroll from the hotel led us to the pristine beach, where we savored the sun and sea every day. The beach offers the convenience of renting lounge chairs with charming tiki huts for added relaxation.

Our hotel's prime location also facilitated our exploration of Lagos. A quick 5-minute Uber ride took us to the vibrant marina, where we embarked on thrilling excursions. Additionally, a 5-10 minute Uber journey transported us to downtown Lagos, a hub of lively streets adorned with live music and street performers.

Every evening, we ventured into downtown Lagos, where the enchanting atmosphere came alive with live music echoing through the streets and street performers delighting the crowds. It was a delightful experience for all, and my daughter especially enjoyed joining other children in dancing to the music.

Lagos, with its captivating blend of natural beauty, adventure, and vibrant culture, proved to be a destination that exceeded our expectations. Whether you seek relaxation on the beach, thrilling water activities, or the charm of a lively town, Lagos welcomes you with open arms.
